Discover your Hidden Passions

There are rich rewards for following your heart.

Having a passion for something isn't just a way to pass time.  "Passion builds resiliency," says Valerie Bates, co-author of Self-Worth: Creating Prosperity, Serenity and Balance in Life. "It creates a sense of purpose and well being.  And knowing yourself is the key to discovering your passion."  Here, Bates' advice on how to do just that.

Look into your past
"Try to recall something you did as a child that gave you pleasure," advises Bates.  Maybe you took ballet lessons or played on a softball team.  If you can't immediately remember anything, then act out some of your childhood fantasies.  Perhaps you used to daydream about singing like Tina Turner.  Whatever it was you dreamed about, this exercise will help you tap into your carefree past.

Write down your strengths
Now, jot down the things that you've accomplished at home or on the job.  Then, think of the skills that these tasks required.  If you're a nurse who's got the stamina to work 12-hour shifts, maybe you'd enjoy swimming laps at the local pool.
Visualize your perfect day
Close your eyes and ask yourself the question, "What is my definition of a perfect day?"  Allow your mind to wander and take notice of the details in your mental image, like where you are and how you feel.  This cements a picture of what you want in your subconscious," says Bates.  "And once you find your passion, you're on your way to greater happiness!"
