Herbal Cures
for common ailments

Rheumatism, Menopause, Sciatica:  Black Cohosh is commonly used for female complaints, such as menopause disorders, dysmenorrhea, PMS, and to facilitate labor in the last two weeks of pregnancy. It is also a remedy for rheumatism, bronchitis, tinnitis, and hysteria and is a known muscle relaxant. In Chinese medicine it is used for organ prolapses, headaches, measles, and sore gums due to superficial heat.
Caution:  Can cause dizziness, nausea, and headache in sensitive individuals, or with high doses. Best to avoid during pregnancy, except for the last 2 weeks before parturition, but only under the strict supervision of a health care professional. Available as a capsule, tincture or tea.
Poison Ivy:  Make your own jewelweed salve. Its real easy.  All you do is simmer a handful of the stems in a quart of vegetable oil(preferably lite) for 15 minutes, strain out the stems, add a handful of beeswax and heat till melted. Then you take a spoonful and let it cool.  Add wax or oil until you get the consistency you want.  Then pop  open a vitamin E caplet (oil soluble) and stir that in.  Store in airtight containers in fridge.  It's supposed to last several months in fridge.
Suggested Uses:
1. rub a small amount  on hands if you are going to be exposed to poison ivy.
2. rub a small amount on exposed area if you were not prepared and got exposed to the stuff.
3. rub small amount on rash if it appears.
This is also supposed to be good for athletes foot, ringworm, stinging nettles, bee stings, and bug bites.   I received this recipe from my friend Fern, who got it from the book:  Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants (in Wild and Not So Wild) Places written by  "Wildman" Steve Brill with Evelyn Dean
